Non-communicable diseases have been recognized as a global epidemic, claiming thirty-six million lives in 2008 alone. The Philippines faces the so-called epidemiologic transition, whereby communicable diseases still threaten the populace on the one hand, while deaths due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are steadily rising on the other.
NCDs, being lifestyle-related, are also best addressed by reducing the prevalence of common risk factors, primarily tobacco use, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet and obesity, physical inactivity and road traffic accidents.
